Transparent Fees and Engagement
Solicitors and barristers instructing an expert witness need certainty about costs before committing to a report. Karim Ali's fee structure is transparent: a fee estimate for the agreed scope is provided before instructions are confirmed, travel costs are disclosed before travel is booked, and there are no additional charges that are not disclosed in advance.
The engagement process is straightforward. An initial discussion to assess the matter takes no more than 15 to 20 minutes and is provided at no charge. A conflict check is run concurrently. Once cleared, a fee estimate for the specific scope of work is provided and, once accepted, a letter of engagement is issued.
Fees are competitive with the market for WHS expert witness work at this level of seniority and credentialing. Karim does not discount fees below a level that would compromise the time needed to produce a high-quality, defensible expert opinion.
How the Engagement Process Works

Initial Contact and Matter Assessment
A brief initial discussion by phone or email to understand the matter, the questions to be addressed and the documents available. No charge for this assessment. Conflict check run at this stage.

Fee Estimate and Engagement Confirmation
A fee estimate for the agreed scope is provided by return email. Once accepted, a letter of engagement is issued. The engagement is confirmed on receipt of the letter of instruction and supporting documents.

Document Review and Analysis
All provided documents are reviewed and the expert analysis is conducted. Where additional documents are needed or additional questions arise during the review, the instructing solicitor is advised promptly.

Report Delivery and Invoice
The expert report is delivered within the agreed timeframe. An invoice is issued on delivery and is payable within 14 days. Supplementary instructions, joint conferences and court attendance are invoiced separately as incurred.
What Is Included in the Expert Report Fee
The expert report fee covers review of all documents provided in the letter of instruction, preparation of the expert opinion addressing the questions raised, preparation of the written report in the format required by the applicable court code of conduct, and one round of minor amendments where factual corrections are required. The fee estimate is provided as a fixed price or as a time estimate at the agreed hourly rate, depending on the nature and complexity of the matter.
- Review of all documents listed in the letter of instruction
- Analysis and preparation of the expert opinion
- Preparation of the written expert witness report
- Expert declaration in the form required by the applicable code
- One round of factual amendments where required
Additional Charges Quoted Separately
The following services are quoted separately as additional charges, confirmed before the work is undertaken.
- Site inspections: half-day or full-day rate plus travel at cost
- Supplementary reports addressing additional questions or new documents
- Joint expert conference preparation and attendance
- Court or tribunal attendance, including preparation time and travel
- Pre-trial specialist conference with counsel
- Interstate travel: return airfare, accommodation if required, plus half-day travel rate
Expedited reports can be accommodated in most cases where advance notice of the urgency is provided. An uplift on the standard report fee may apply where the urgency requires work outside normal business hours or the deferral of other instructions.
