Manufacturing Industry
WHS Expert Witness
Independent expert opinion on manufacturing industry WHS matters. Machine guarding and plant safety, hazardous chemicals, manual handling on production lines, shift work fatigue and manufacturing-specific codes of practice. Plaintiff and defendant instructions accepted nationally.
Manufacturing Industry Expert Witness Scope
Manufacturing is one of the most hazardous industries in Australia for serious workplace injury. Machine guarding failures, chemical exposures, repetitive manual handling and fatigue from shift work are consistent causes of injury in factory and production environments. The WHS obligations applicable to manufacturing are specific to the hazards of that industry and require assessment by an expert with knowledge of both the legal framework and how manufacturing environments actually operate.
Karim Ali provides expert opinion on manufacturing industry WHS matters for plaintiff and defendant solicitors and insurers. His experience spans the full range of manufacturing incident types, from contact with unguarded machinery to chemical exposure claims and cumulative manual handling injuries. Instructions are accepted nationally in workers' compensation and public liability proceedings.
Manufacturing Incidents Commonly Instructed
- Contact with unguarded or inadequately guarded machinery
- Entanglement in conveyor systems and rotating plant
- Exposure to hazardous chemicals, fumes and dusts
- Repetitive strain and cumulative manual handling injuries
- Fatigue-related incidents from extended shift work
- Burns and scalds from hot surfaces and liquids in process manufacturing
- Forklift and materials handling incidents in warehouse areas
- Noise-induced hearing loss from inadequate noise controls
See the machinery and plant safety expert and manual handling expert pages for detailed analysis of those incident types.
Manufacturing-Specific WHS Analysis
The expert analysis in manufacturing matters addresses the specific hazards and obligations of the manufacturing environment, including the plant safety, chemical and fatigue-related requirements that are particularly relevant to this industry.
-
01Machine Guarding and Plant Safety
Assessment of guarding adequacy against AS 4024 Safety of Machinery, whether guards could be removed or defeated during operation, whether interlocks and safety devices were functional, whether plant risk assessments were adequate and whether isolation procedures were followed. Machine guarding failures are the most common cause of serious manufacturing injuries.
-
02Hazardous Chemicals Management
Assessment of whether hazardous chemicals were identified, whether safety data sheets were available and up to date, whether exposure controls were adequate, whether personal protective equipment was provided and used correctly and whether health monitoring was conducted for workers with regular chemical exposure.
-
03Shift Work and Fatigue Management
Assessment of whether the duty holder had a fatigue risk management system appropriate for the shift patterns used, whether shift lengths and rotation arrangements were consistent with fatigue science, whether workers were monitored for fatigue and whether the duty holder had a policy for managing fatigue-impaired workers.
-
04Manufacturing Codes of Practice
Assessment of compliance with the managing risks of plant in the workplace code, the managing the risk of musculoskeletal disorders code, the labelling of workplace hazardous chemicals code and any industry-specific standards applicable to the specific type of manufacturing carried out at the workplace.
